This is basic and delicious. And cheap! Best deal in town for a burger and fries. The milk shakes are delicious too. The pineapple is so refreshing!

Best burger ever! The meat in burger is juicy and all of the other ingredients are fresh. The French fries is delicious made me want to eat that everyday

What happened to our ever consistent Happy Dog. You know the place, big dog, white floppy ears and chefs hat painted on the building that's been there since..heck I don't know, since cavemen grilled their burgers over open flames. So,cutting to the chase, obviously they stopped using quality beef. Hot dog was so salty only half could be eaten, the French Fries which I would crawl on hands and knees to once get a hold of, stale? How the heck do French fries go stale when they just dumped them out of a vat of bubbly oil?
Only thing that stayed the same since the first time I ever tried it in 1979....the pineapple milkshake! -

Community staple burger joint that has lost its touch over the years. Still run with lots of love, but a recent visit left me wanting the old school vibe and taste!
I am pretty sure I have only ordered burgers and fries here...and I mean forever (Over 15+ years), so please consider that. The original owners are still there and working their rear ends off. As for the service, its pretty fast, but do not be turned off from the lack of conversation from the staff as they are there to churn the food out first and foremost. As for parking, yes it can be odd and limited and quite packed at time, but expect to find a spot nearby even during peak hours. Not a ton of seats inside, but enough to get you seated and to scarf down some tasty food. I always prefer to call in my order, but only as I am a local, but you could always get it to go and and enjoy your food at the nearby Maxwell Park.
So, why three stars for a long time burger joint in Sonoma? Well the last visit was a letdown. As mentioned earlier, I have been coming here for quite some time, but the burger and fries I ordered were not the same as I remembered. It really felt more like a rushed burger, dry and not flavored well, and most of all missing the signature BBQ sauce. As for the fries, they were a tad overcooked and not ideal. I am not too picky, but I was not impressed with the last meal and really hope it was just a one off. Am I giving up on Happy Dog, nope! I will be back in hopes for that same old school meal! -

Based on other reviews, it sounds like Happy Dog is a staple in Sonoma history and I am not surprised to see why. Walking in, you'll see they've received PLENTY of accolades for their food. They have a pretty small menu but everything sounds tasty!
I went with the French Roll Burger with a side of fries. It's a bit pricey for a burger but the portion is pretty decent. With the French Roll Burger, they use French Roll Bread versus the typical burger bun so it's basically double the size of a normal burger for about $1-2 more. They slice it for you too so it's more than enough for two people! The burger was also pretty greasy BUT the good kind of greasy. It was delicious! The fries were good. Service was straightforward. You go and order at the counter then they prepare it and deliver it to your table. Not bad.
Parking for the Happy Dog is pretty awkward because you're not really sure if you're on a spot or if you're blocking other cards from getting into Main Street. But to be safe, I suggest just street parking on Main to give you less worries about your car being scratched or being in the way of others.
Definitely will be back! (Next time, I'm getting the milkshake FOR SURE)
